Wednesday last week I held a Halloween party at my house, for a small group of friends. I hadn’t planned anything too big, after all it was a week night and we all had work the next day. But I thought it would be fun if we all came in fancy dress and played a few party games. I put up some decorations and prepared some food and mulled wine.
In the end, there were six of us in total, including my friend Tom, who has a bit of a reputation for his clumsiness. He’s like an overgrown teenager and somehow whenever there’s a party, Tom will manage to have some kind of accident. I remember back in the summer he managed to knock a friend’s potted plant onto the carpet. And another time he even fell into a fish pond!
Anyway, last Wednesday poor Tom lived up to his reputation. Not long after arriving in fact, dressed as Dracula, he managed to spill his glass of mulled wine all over himself and my loveseat, where he was sitting. I had thought he’d be out of harm’s way if he was sitting down, but obviously I was wrong. He was extremely apologetic and mortified at the thought that he’d ruined my couch. As I knew the slipcover was washable, I wasn’t too worried. He was relieved to hear that I’d covered all my furniture in washable slipcovers!
But that wasn’t the end of his clumsy behaviour. A little later on in the evening, he was sitting on my other loveseat while we all played games, and clearly wasn’t paying much attention his plate of food. You guessed the rest – that’s right, his entire plate piled high with party snacks tipped over and the contents went all over another slipcover. A sticky mixture of coleslaw, salad dressing, potato salad and tomatoes ended up on the seat next to him!
He kindly mopped most of the mess up, but like before, the slipcover was left with a dirty stain on. The other guests looked horrified, until I reassured them that this is precisely why I always use slipcovers at events like this! They hadn’t realised that all my seats – my loveseats, sofa and chairs – were protected by stretch slipcovers, as they fit so well they look like the original upholstery.
So, once again, my loveseat slipcovers have proved to be a very wise investment!
