Fitting Slipcovers on Leather Furniture

Friday, February 29th, 2008

I was round at my friend Jane’s house having coffee a few weeks back.  As we walked into her living room, I noticed that she had a pretty throw on her couch and commented on it, not realizing that this was a touchy subject!  Jane replied that yes, the throw did look nice, but it was driving her crazy – whenever anyone sat on the sofa it always slipped off and crumpled.  She’d only put it on there because she’d got tired of her shabby looking leather sofa and wanted to cover up the worn, cracked patches.

She told me she wished she could get a sofa cover for it, but as it was leather, she didn’t see any point in spending money on a fitted slipcover if it was just going to slip off like the throw.

This is where I had to stop her.  I explained that all she needed to do was get a non skid rug pad or go to the craft store and buy some foam batting and cut it to size.  By putting this over the seat before fitting a slipcover over the top, it’ll stop the cover sliding about on the shiny leather underneath.  Jane loved this idea – it was so simple, but it hadn’t crossed her mind to try it.

A couple of weeks later I got a call from Jane thanking me for the tip.  She was really happy because by using foam batting she’d managed to get some stretch slipcovers to fit perfectly on her leather couch and arm chairs, and she couldn’t believe how good they looked – even when someone had been sitting on them for all afternoon!

How To Clean Sofa Slipcovers

Monday, February 25th, 2008

I quite often get friends asking me for the best way to clean their sofa slipcovers.  It seems some people are a bit wary about putting their slipcovers in the wash, perhaps thinking something terrible will happen like they’ll shrink or fall apart!  I’ve got a friend who even attempted to wash a heavy cotton twill couch cover by hand.

Anyway, my advice is simple really – check the care instructions for your particular slipcover.  And if you’re thinking of buying a new slipcover, check before you buy to ensure it’s machine washable, as that’ll make your life much easier.

Generally though, most ready made slipcovers can be washed successfully in a machine, using a cold water wash and a slow spin, and no bleach of course.  Many can be tumble dried on a low setting – again it will tell you on the label – but if in any doubt, just pick a sunny day and hang your covers on the line to dry naturally.

With regards to ironing slipcovers, again it pays to check the label.  If you fit your slipcover straight back onto your furniture once it’s dry, it shouldn’t really need to be ironed.  If there are a few creases once it’s fitted, my tip is to gently spray the wrinkles with water, using a very fine mist (use a plant mister), and then smooth them out by hand.

New Furniture Slipcovers For Spring

Friday, February 8th, 2008

The days are getting slightly longer and plants in my garden are beginning to show signs of life, which means Spring is hopefully just around the corner.  For me, the change in season is a great excuse to give your home a makeover and treat yourself to some new furniture covers.  I think it’s always nice to have a change, and it’s much simpler (and cheaper!) to fit a couple of new slipcovers than to go to the trouble of redecorating.  It’s surprising how something as easy as changing your sofa slipcover can alter the look and feel of the whole room.

If you’re looking for inspiration for your home’s new image, be sure to check out the great new slipcovers in Sure Fit’s Spring Collection.  They’ve got a slipcover to please all tastes, from the pretty floral patterned Americana (for chairs, loveseats and sofas) to the matelasse design Asbury (for sofas and loveseats).  I also personally like the shabby chic look and ruffled skirt of the Chantal Floral design, which is available in sofa, loveseat and wing chair sizes.

Custom Slipcovers – Treat Your Furniture To A Makeover

Monday, February 4th, 2008

February is a good month for planning ahead for the coming year and getting a head start on your spring cleaning.  One of the things I like to do regularly is change my furniture slipcovers, whether for a change in season or just because I feel like giving my room a different look.  I’m lucky because my couch and armchairs are all fairly modern and are a standard size, which means any ready made slipcovers fit.

Pre-made slipcovers tend to be much cheaper in price than those that are made to measure.  This is because they can be mass-produced in bulk and there’s a lot less work involved in their construction.  On the other hand, because custom slipcovers are individually made to order, using the precise measurements of your furniture, they are going to cost a bit more.

If you’ve got an unique item of furniture that doesn’t conform to the standard size, a ready made cover isn’t going to fit and is going to look a mess, to say the least.  No amount of tugging and tucking is going to work if the measurements simply aren’t right.  But there’s no need to despair – custom made slipcovers needn’t cost you a small fortune if you order them online from Slipcover Shop

Slipcover Shop pride themselves on making quality custom furniture covers at an unbeatable price.  They can make covers for any sofas, loveseats and chairs that have removable cushions, whether T-shaped or square, and with either round or square arms.  They can also make separate covers for loose back cushions and seat cushions if required – it’s up to you.  And it’s not just couch covers – they can produce to order all sorts of covers for armless furniture, ottomans and dining chairs.

What helps make these custom slipcovers so affordable is that rather than Slipcover Shop sending someone out to measure your furniture, they let you take your own measurements, which you can enter online when you place your order.  They provide a useful measuring guide so you can be sure exactly what measurements you need.  Another thing that’s great about this service, is that once they receive your order, Slipcover Shop aim to deliver your covers really quickly – usually in 5 working days.

So, if you want to give your furniture a spring makeover with inexpensive tailored slipcovers, visit Slipcover Shop now – and if you spend over $219 remember to enter coupon code SLFRS at checkout to get FREE Shipping.

Friday, February 1st, 2008

As I mentioned earlier this week, Sure Fit have recently introduced a range of organic slipcovers.  I think they are already very affordably priced for slipcovers made from eco-friendly fabrics, but as a special promotion to celebrate the launch of these products, Sure Fit are offering 20% off the two designs in this new range.  However, this offer runs for a limited time only and expires on Monday 4th February, so you’ve got hurry to get your order in on time!

The two designs are made from 100% organic cotton and are currently available in both sofa and loveseat sizes.  With the 20% discount, prices are as little as $55.99 for the linen or sage colored Aspen loveseat slipcover and $63.99 for the brown or blue striped Riverstone loveseat slipcover.  For a 3 seat couch, sofa covers cost between $63.99 and $71.99.  Matching pillows are available for only $11.99.  Click here to visit the Sure Fit website and place your order – and remember to do it over the weekend or on Monday at the latest to take advantage of the 20% savings!
