Fitting Slipcovers on Leather Furniture
I was round at my friend Jane's house having coffee a few weeks back. As we walked into her living room, I noticed that she had a pretty throw on her couch and commented on it, not realizing that this was a touchy subject! Jane replied that yes, the throw did look nice, but it was driving her crazy - whenever anyone sat on the sofa it always slipped off and crumpled. She'd only put it on there because she'd got tired of her shabby looking leather sofa and wanted to cover up the worn, cracked patches.
She told me she wished she could get a sofa cover for it, but as it was leather, she didn't see any point in spending money on a fitted slipcover if it was just going to slip off like the throw.
This is where I had to stop her. I explained that all she needed to do was get a non skid rug pad or go to the craft store and buy some foam batting and cut it to size. By putting this over the seat before fitting a slipcover over the top, it'll stop the cover sliding about on the shiny leather underneath. Jane loved this idea - it was so simple, but it hadn't crossed her mind to try it.
A couple of weeks later I got a call from Jane thanking me for the tip. She was really happy because by using foam batting she'd managed to get some stretch slipcovers to fit perfectly on her leather couch and arm chairs, and she couldn't believe how good they looked - even when someone had been sitting on them for all afternoon!
