How To Clean Sofa Slipcovers
I quite often get friends asking me for the best way to clean their sofa slipcovers. It seems some people are a bit wary about putting their slipcovers in the wash, perhaps thinking something terrible will happen like they'll shrink or fall apart! I've got a friend who even attempted to wash a heavy cotton twill couch cover by hand.
Anyway, my advice is simple really - check the care instructions for your particular slipcover. And if you're thinking of buying a new slipcover, check before you buy to ensure it's machine washable, as that'll make your life much easier.
Generally though, most ready made slipcovers can be washed successfully in a machine, using a cold water wash and a slow spin, and no bleach of course. Many can be tumble dried on a low setting - again it will tell you on the label - but if in any doubt, just pick a sunny day and hang your covers on the line to dry naturally.
With regards to ironing slipcovers, again it pays to check the label. If you fit your slipcover straight back onto your furniture once it's dry, it shouldn't really need to be ironed. If there are a few creases once it's fitted, my tip is to gently spray the wrinkles with water, using a very fine mist (use a plant mister), and then smooth them out by hand.
