I’m excited to see that Sure Fit have just started selling slipcovers for futons.  As I quite often spend a weekend away visiting friends, I’ve slept on my fair share of futons in my time.  A futon is the sort of furniture that gets used in all kinds of rooms.  I’ve seen futons in student dorms, plush spare rooms, large living rooms and even home offices that double as spare rooms for visitors.  It makes sense to be able to give this type of furniture a makeover, just as you would a sofa or armchair, especially as most of the time your futon is likely to be used as a couch rather than a bed.

Earlier this year I wrote about how Slipcover Shop were going to start selling slipcovers for dining chairs with arms, and I thought it was about time I did an update on what’s available.

I’ve just got back from a few days visiting with some good friends of mine, Richard and Danielle.  I had a great time catching up with their news and generally relaxing.  I sure feel in a summer mood now.  I hope this warm weather continues over the weekend. 

Anyway, my trip away was the inspiration for this post.  You see, Rich and Danielle have quite a small house, which means they don’t actually have a designated guest room.  I found this out on the evening I arrived when they apologetically announced I was to sleep in the living room on their old sofa bed!

I pointed out that actually most of the time they use their sofa bed as a regular couch, and there’s no reason why a regular sized furniture slipcover wouldn’t fit it.  I know several people who use sofa or loveseat slipcovers on double or queen-sized sofa beds.  You just have to remove it when you want to open up the bed.  Or if you get a cover with a straight skirt you can just lift up the skirt to pull the bed out.

Hopefully I’ve inspired Danielle and Richard to give their sofa bed a makeover and I look forward to seeing it’s new look next time I visit!

Back in April I wrote a post about my friend Chrissie and how she found a way to use stretchy slipcovers on her furniture with loose back cushions.  She couldn’t find any that were designed to fit this style, so following my advice she replaced the back cushions with new pillows and is very happy with the result.

I was chatting to my neighbour at the other weekend and she was telling me about how she’d recently been to visit her son, who’s in his second year at university.  It’s his first experience of living in a shared house – he’s sharing with 4 other boys – and his mother was quite shocked at the mess that greeted her on her arrival.  Apparently there were dirty dishes lying on every available surface, the beds weren’t made and the bathroom was disgusting.  This didn’t really surprise me, having been a student myself.  I can’t imagine there are many student houses that are anywhere near being clean and tidy!

It’s surprising how many people don’t realize that you can get ready made slipcovers for wingback chairs.  It seems a lot of people think they only make slipcovers for the more common types of furniture, such as regular armchairs.  A prime example of this was last weekend, when I was having dinner at my cousin’s house.  I noticed that she’d got lovely new slipcovers on her sofa and loveseat, but she’d clearly neglected to do anything with her old wing chair.
